How to disable pop-up notifications in Google Chrome
What are pop-up notifications?
If you’re using a web-browser and suddenly something that looks like an advertisement pops up at the bottom right corner of your screen, you might have accidentally given a website permission to give you notifications. This is a marketing tactic that has gained much popularity in the last few years. See the screenshot below for an example.
What can I do about them?
This article includes instructions for how to pick and choose which notifications to allow or block, as well as blocking all notifications across the board.
Below is a screenshot of the dialogue that prompts you for permission to send you notifications:
If you click ‘allow’, you are giving that website permission to send you ads and notifications. If you click ‘block’ you are preventing them from doing so.
If you are already receiving notifications that you don’t want, here are some steps to stopping them:
- Click on the three-dot menu at the top right of the Google Chrome browser. Once the menu opens, click on Settings
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on Advanced
- Under the Privacy and Security heading, click on Site Settings
and then Notifications
- Your screen will then look like this:
The above screen will allow you to block all notifications, allow all notifications, and/or remove any notifications you currently are receiving. In the above screenshot, only Google Drive, Docs and Mail are allowed to send notifications. You can click on any of these entries and it will give you the option to set Notifications to Block
If you want to block all notifications from your browser across the board, simply switch the “Ask before sending (recommended) setting to “Blocked” by clicking on the switch.
